The State Government has sold a large part of the historic Glenside campus despite widespread public anger and opposition to the sale. On Tuesday the Parliament was told the Government had signed a contract for the sale of 2.1ha of land to the Chapley Retail Group. Local MP Vickie Chapman said the Government’s decision to push ahead with the sale was disappointing and evidence the Premier won’t follow through with a promise to listen more. “The Government didn’t need to sell this land. That is very clear” Ms Chapman said. “An invaluable state asset has been sold to help prop up a financially incompetent government. “I was appalled that the Health Minister and Minister for the Environment laughed when the matter of significant trees was raised on Tuesday. “The Rann Government might not care about Glenside but people who require mental health services do and local residents do.” Ms Chapman said she was also concerned at the timing of the sale given a District court action concerning the public release of documents concerning the sale was pending. “We have been fighting for the release of documents surrounding the proposed sale to be released to allow proper public scrutiny of the project for three years. “This fight is continuing and I find the Government’s decision to progress the sale prior to a judgement being delivered totally unacceptable.”
