Liberal MP Vickie Chapman will this morning introduce the first in a string of amendments to Freedom of Information laws to provide greater scrutiny of government.

The first amendment will waive fees for journalists who make applications under the Freedom of Information Act 1991 which can be dealt with by a government agency in less than five hours.

Ms Chapman says FOI reform is critical to provide greater transparency and more robust scrutiny of government.

“The news is where most people get their information about how the government is spending their money and what services are being provided.

“Granting journalists easier access to government information will make government more transparent.

“Unfortunately transparency isn’t one of the Rann Government’s strong points and FOI reform hasn’t been forthcoming.”

Further amendments will be introduced for debate in the parliament by Ms Chapman in the coming months.
