A Redmond Liberal Government is committed to crime prevention doubling the amount of funding for local crime prevention projects across South Australia in its first term. Shadow Attorney-General Vickie Chapman announced the $4.8m policy today in Brighton. “A Redmond Liberal Government will make $1.2m available for local crime prevention initiatives per year – double the amount spent by the Rann Labor Government in 2009,” Ms Chapman said. “The funding will be directed towards projects which aim to reduce crime through increased surveillance such as CCTV and diversionary programs. “Unlike the arrogant Rann Government the SA Liberal team have listened to the people and organisations that are at the frontline dealing with and reacting to the impacts of crime at a local level - such as Local councils and the Local Government Association. “We will increase resources for programs that are aimed at reducing crime; programs that provide options and pathways for people who otherwise may become involved in criminal behaviour – these programs help to protect the community and protect people’s property. “Theft and property damage are significant problems in most neighbourhoods across SA. “The financial cost to the community is massive – but the negative affect that crime has on people’s sense of safety and security is destructive, it can isolate individuals, it can tear communities apart. “Providing young people with opportunities to become involved in an activity or group within their local community is a proven strategy in helping to keep at risk young people out of trouble. “A proactive targeting of funds to prevent crime will assist in making our streets safer, will assist in repairing and building community confidence and in the long run significantly reduce the financial costs of crime.”
