Two key areas of the Liberal Party’s election policy to make government more accountable have received a big tick of approval from the South Australian Law Society.

The Law Society has released its election wish list and the establishment of an Independent Commission Against Corruption and a Law Reform Commission feature prominently.

Shadow Attorney-General Vickie Chapman said the Liberal’s were very pleased the Law Society shared a similar vision for law reform and government accountability.

“We see the establishment of these two commissions as critical to the future development of the South Australian legal system and to ensure public services operate as transparently as possible.

“It’s great to see the Law Society shares that vision and I look forward to continuing our good working relationship in the future.”

Ms Chapman said the Liberals would restore a co-operative approach to law reform which had been lost over the past eight years.

“For the last eight years Mike Rann and Michael Atkinson have publicly attacked the legal system and dismissed the opinions of senior legal professionals and judges.

“We will install a fresh approach that will deliver better laws and a safer South Australia.

The Liberals proposed Law Reform Commission will be chaired by a serving or retired Supreme Court Justice and will have three main tasks:

1. Review legislation before it is introduced to the Parliament to ensure it will provide the greatest benefit to the community
2. Provide law reform advice to government
3. Review all criminal penalties in consultation with victims and members of the community
