A Liberal Government will provide greater protection for people who expose improper and dangerous conduct.

Changes will be made to the Whistleblower Protection Act that will expand who disclosures can be made to and protect a greater number of whistleblowers.

Shadow Attorney-General Vickie Chapman says the increased protection will help promote greater transparency and increase confidence in government services.

“People have to be comfortable coming forward and at the moment we don’t provide whistleblowers with enough protection.

“We want to restore confidence in public services and end the culture of secrecy which has thrived under Rann Labor.

“In the most serious cases whistleblowers expose dangerous situations in hospitals and the misappropriation of funds through government agencies.

The Liberal’s proposed changes include:

1. Expanding protection for whistleblowers to include disclosures made to Members of Parliament. Currently public interest disclosures cannot be made to Members of Parliament unless the MP is a Government Minister.

2. Protect disclosures made to the media where the matter has been disclosed internally or externally, and has not been acted on in a reasonable time having regard to the nature of the matter, and the matter threatens immediate serious harm to public health and safety.

3. Allow the Ombudsman to publish reports of investigations or other information relating to disclosures (including the identity of persons against whom allegations are made) where the Ombudsman considers it is in the public interest to do so.
